Newest Michigan DOT Reality Check Video Explains Why Repaired Roads Need More Upkeep

AASHTO Journal, 20 June 2014

Michigan Department of Transportation this week released its latest “Reality Check” video, explaining why roads that have been repaired recently tend to need additional attention sooner than the public would hope.

MDOT’s “Transportation Reality Check” campaign aims to dispel some common transportation and MDOT myths through a series of online videos and fact sheets addressing various rumors Michigan citizens may have heard. Topics thus far have covered the real purpose and process for potholes, using salt on roadways during the winter, and the larger topic of transportation investment in Michigan.

The newest video combats “Myth #5—Michigan needs to build roads that last,” focusing on why some repairs MDOT makes on existing roadways are not lasting as long as drivers would like, or as long as new infrastructure would. Reconstructing and rebuilding roads can cost eight to 10 times more than repairing the current infrastructure, MDOT officials said, and additional investment and revenue is needed to do that work.
