Next SHRP2 Tuesday Webinar to Focus on Evaluating Hot Mix Asphalt

AASHTO Journal, 30 May 2014

The Transportation Research Board this week announced that registration is now available for a webinar that will cover two second Strategic Highway Research Program projects: “Technologies to Enhance Quality Control on Asphalt Pavements” (R06C) and “Nondestructive Testing to Identify Delaminations between HMA Layers” (R06D). The webinar is part of TRB’s SHRP2 Tuesdays webinar series, which highlights various SHRP2 products every two weeks.

The free webinar will take place Tuesday, June 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. ET. TRB administers the SHRP2 program under a memorandum of understanding with AASHTO and the FHWA. Advance registration is required.

SHRP2’s R06C “reviewed, pilot-tested, and refined two nondestructive techniques” for finding defect areas in asphalt pavements during construction. The project also developed recommendations for testing and a training video showcasing how to use the technology. R06D went through the same review, pilot-testing, and production process to come up with guidelines for using ground-penetrating radar.

Webinar participants will learn of several nondestructive techniques for detecting problem areas in asphalt pavements during construction and surface delamination in asphalt pavement post-construction, discuss the problems of current standard testing methods for detecting defect areas both during and after construction, and list the appropriate measurement and data format standards for using nondestructive technologies (and when to and not to use them).

Federal Highway Administration’s Stephen Cooper, Texas Transportation Institute’s Stephen Sebesta, and National Center for Asphalt Technology’s Michael Heitzman are all tapped to present during the webinar. TRB’s Matthew Miller will moderate the discussion.

Additional information on the webinar, including registration details, is available here. Further details on the SHRP2 program can be found at SHRP2.transportation.org.
